At the end of every festive season it is not uncommon to hear people telling each other that it is time to go on a diet. After all, they have eaten and drank to excess during the holidays and the net result has been the addition of some much unwanted extra weight. This does, however, beg the question: Have the given proper consideration to planning how (and if) they should go on a diet.
Before you go on any diet you really need to be asking yourself the following questions:
- do I really need to go on a diet, or do I just need to be a little more disciplined about my eating habits?
- would doing a little extra regular work-outs make more sense than not working-out at all, but eating less?
- if I go on my diet, is my body going to be receiving sufficient minerals and vitamins to sustain itself?

As we have all heard, being overweight significantly increases your risk of heart disease, diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure, cancer, and other chronic diseases. One of the best things you can do for your overall health is to drop a few pounds (or more), by cutting calories and burning more through regular exercise. Slimming down doesn’t have to be painful, and you can improve your health and enjoy feeling great just by managing your diet better. Successful weight management always comes back to calories, and if you take in more than you use, you will gain weight. Just eat less and you’ll lose, right? If only it were that simple. Different diets may come and go, but the real trick is to find meals that will satisfy your hunger, not leave you feeling deprived and depressed.

Regardless of where you turn, you’re likely to spot some recent coverage of weight loss and dieting. It’s virtually inevitable. Click on the television and view the latest infomercial break-through hoopla. I’m sure some pseudo intellectual MD will step out and attempt to sell you a questionable supplement. Most likely it’s guaranteed to get those irksome excess pounds off in mere days. Or, flip open that magazine next to you in the check-out isle and scan the newest diet article for middle-aged women. Maybe it has something valid to offer and maybe not. It’s often difficult to tell with all the data floating around.
Fitness nuts and exercise gurus will often offer varying information. While it’s a cinch to read the latest diet article, how do you know what program is right for you? Well, you may want to look for the individual/specialist who isn’t trying to pitch you something. Because let’s face it; you can read diet articles and watch infomercials until the sun goes down, but simply listening and reading isn’t going to get the job done. If you want my advice, and I’m sure you do; try a qualified personal trainer. Now I do realize that some charge an arm and a leg, but you don’t have to go to the most exclusive professionals in the business. What about the personal trainers at your local YMCA? From what I’ve seen, they generally know just as much as the other guys and gals. Buy a month of sessions with them in order to get on the right track. They can talk to you about diet, and get you started with the ideal fitness program to suit your weak areas that need improvement.

You will find a free list of negative calorie foods below, but first let’s consider what this means. There is no such thing as a negative calorie - a calorie is a unit of heat and it cannot be negative. So when people talk about negative calorie foods, this just means a food whose calorie level is low enough that it takes more energy to eat and digest it than the food contains.
For example, if you consider water to be a food, then cold water is certainly a negative calorie food. It contains no calories at all and the body has to expend energy to bring it up to blood temperature. So every time we drink a glass of cold water we burn up a couple of calories and lose a little weight. But there are very few foods like this. Most foods that are on the list do not really use more calories than they add, or if they do the effect is negligible … until you remember that at the same time the body expends energy just to keep alive and breathing. Celery for example does not give us enough calories to cover both the energy that it takes to digest it, plus the energy that we expend even when we are doing nothing. So that is why people call it a negative calorie food.
Negative calorie foods are most attractive to anorexics. A negative calorie diet would obviously result in starvation in the long term and nutritional deficiencies can occur surprisingly quickly. The calories burnt usually come from muscle mass, and the result is debility and wasting.
A more healthy way to use a negative calorie diet is as a form of fasting or detox. It is something you can do for one to three days right after the Christmas season or another time when you have been eating a over-rich diet. Provided you are otherwise healthy it can be a great way to clean out the system. However it is still best to take medical advice before attempting this.

Although there is a lot of information available about weight loss, related diet mistakes are being made time and again every day. We’re not peaching here only about little slips where you wiped out a slice of pie that was not on the plan, but huge mistakes that come before failure to lose the weight that you would like to lose. Recognizing these mistakes can help you build up the mental attitude that will add to long-lasting weight loss for you.
1. The every Or Nothing Attitude
All or nothing dieters will often pick out a complicated diet that is almost impossible for them to maintain. Before beginning, they will search the kitchen for anything that does not fit the plan and throw it in the garbage. They are planning to be the perfect dieter, and so they will be, for one day, three days, seven days or even a couple of weeks. Then, inevitably, something happens that means they cannot keep to the diet one time. Immediately the whole thing is ruined in their eyes and the diet is over. They go to the store and buy all the things that went into the garbage last week and proceed to gain back all the weight that they lost, as fast as possible.
If you are this kind of dieter you need to ask yourself some tough questions. Do you really want to lose weight permanently, or just lose a few pounds so that you can enjoy putting them back on again? The way forward is to make small changes to what you eat so that you have a slow but steady weight loss.

The first step to weight loss in college is eating healthy foods. While you might be tempted to trade in your water for a beer or your salad for a slice of greasy pizza, doing this too often can really kill any weight loss plans you may have. When you first begin attending college, check out what kinds of healthy choices are available at the student cafeteria and what kinds of healthy choices are available from restaurants in the area. It is also a good idea to invest in a mini refrigerator so that you can keep low-fat snacks, like yogurt and carrots, on hand. This also allows you to prepare some small meals in your room instead of grabbing a snack from the vending machines.
